Usually
when summer approaches you know that there is going to
be a hand - full of great blockbuster hits, but now I
can definitely say that summer came early with "Gladiator".
The film paves the way for the magnitude of things to
come, which to compete will have to be a combination of
great drama and excellent action. But enough about the
future, let's stay with the present.
In a quick synopsis, the film tells the story of a great
Roman war general, Maximus, who is offered the role of
Caesar of Rome, yet does not have the chance to accept,
due to the fact that the prince who is passed for the
power kills his father, the present Caesar. After escaping
death, Maximus unsuccessfully tried to save his family
and is taken into slavery and forced to fight for the
entertainment of others as a gladiator. His performances
lead his the Rome, where he fights in front of the new
Caesar, the murderous son, and later reveals himself to
his, promising revenge. If you would know the rest of
the plot prior to watching the film you would know the
whole story and would not go see. However, here are a
few reasons to persuade you to watch it.
Have you ever seen a movie that brings you in the middle
of the struggle, love, and passion; a film that makes
you love to hate the villain - "Gladiator" is your last
stop! Maximus and Commodus (Crowe and Phoenix) put on
one of the best shows for the audience, making them 100%
contenders for MTV's "Celebrity Death Match". First with
a fight of words and later of swords, the two explode
onto the screen with powerful roots to their roles. Other
characters are no less important, but unfortunately they
are overshadowed by the duo of light and darkness. The
film has grand fighting sequences and scenes, not to mention
that dramatic side of the plot. All together, the film
is a very strong red carpet for Russell Crowe's Oscar
- winning role, and with a time length of two and a half
hours, "Gladiator" could be the next "Titanic".
