THE
PLANET OF THE APES
Synopsis
Tim
Burton's "re-imagining" of the original film series depicts
an upside-down world, a brutal, primal place where humans
are hunted and enslaved by tyrannical apes. The sudden
appearance of Leo Davidson (Mark Wahlberg), a human unaffected
by this present order of things, serves as a catalyst
for revolutionary social change. Tim Roth, Helena Bonham
Carter and Michael Clarke Duncan also star.
Review
Some
say that a remake always underplays the original. However,
that is only when the remake copies the story of the original.
The director successfully managed to avoid that mistake
in "The Planet of the Apes" by using the same
idea with an original twist.
While
nearly two hours long, the film seems to go by at a fast
paced of a never-ending thrill ride. The characters of
the movie get few brakes in-between the fighting, running,
and swimming.
Another
positive aspect of the film was the believable set of
apes (not monkeys). Going past the spectacular and realistic
make-up and right into the monkey-like walk, the dwellers
of the Ape City prove themselves to be true natives.
The
film even has a cameo from the original Ape fighter, Charles
Heston, who this time puts on the monkey suit to play
Thade's father, who (ironically) gives Thade a human-made
gun.
As
well all know, the conclusion of the original film simply
can not be duplicated. The appearance of the Statue of
Liberty is a unique idea that will stay that way. Yet
Tim Burton tries to top it with his own variation that
you simply must see...you'll bananas for it!
