Artificial
Intelligence
Synopsis
Based
on Brian Aldiss's short story "Super-Toys Last All Summer
Long," and adapted from a treatment of the tale by the
late Stanley Kubrick, Steven Spielberg's latest takes
place sometime in the future of the 21st century, when
the Greenhouse Effect has melted the icecaps, submerging
many coastal cities in water. In this atmosphere, mankind
depends upon computers with artificial intelligence to
maintain a comfortable way of life. Humans have also found
new friends in A.I., robots that are used for a variety
of everyday functions. One of these boy robots (Haley
Joel Osment) undertakes an emotional journey toward becoming
something more than a machine. Also stars Jude Law and
William Hurt.
Review
Ambitiously
intriguing? Yup. Absolutely insightful? Sure. Almost intolerable?
Yes. Originally developed by the late Stanley Kubrick
and directed by Steven Spielberg, A.I. is one of those
event films with heavy acting, seamless special effects
and a story so big it'll have critic-types arguing about
it 2000 years into the future. Basically a futuristic
fairy tale of robo-boy Haley Joel Osment who just wants
to be loved, the epic touches on the relationship between
man and machine, love and family--but it's probably not
for kids who'll be bored at its lengthy running time and
freaked out by its robot torture scenes.
Interesting to look at and more interesting to talk about
later, it's also just plain boring at times (mainly during
its slow beginning and its groaning turn at the end).
Slyly stealing the show are Jude Law as sex-bot Gigolo
Joe (make a film of his story) and Osment's adorable talking
Teddy Ruxpin-of-the-future bear toy.
