THE
MUMMY RETURNS
Synopsis
Set
in 1935, 10 years after the events of 1999's The Mummy,
Rick (Brendan Fraser) and Evelyn O'Connell (Rachel Weisz)
are now married and settled in London, where they are
raising their 9-year-old son, Alex. The mummy Imhotep
is resurrected in the British Museum, determined to fulfill
his quest for immortality, and another, even more powerful
force has also been set loose in the world: The Scorpion
King (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson). When these two clash,
the fate of the world will hang in the balance, sending
the O'Connells on a desperate race to save the planet,
and their son, from an unspeakable evil.
Review
As
we all know, making a good sequel is ten times harder
than making the original. The main dilemma becomes trying
to top the action, story, and effects of the first. While
few succeed in this task, film such as "The Mummy
Returns" show the audience that this task is still
feasible.
As
the film begins, it automatically draws one in and pushing
the audience toward the edge of their seats. Fight scenes
in the movie become more elaborate, with talent of the
martial arts flung all over the big screen. In an interesting
side note, when Rick O'Connell is battling The Scorpion
King, there is a scene in which the face of the stunt
double is obviously visible. Yet that is a minor setback
for all of the other aspects of the feature.
Story
is where some of the due credit for the sequel is lost.
While involving original aspects, such as a son, a new
villain, and a reincarnated Empress, the same basic plot
is repeated, involving the love affair of the Mummy and
the Phaero's wife. Yet now the tail goes as step farther
than in the original flick.
The
effects in this film surpass the original in many ways.
While of course being of the standards of the first film,
the two-year time interval did allow for new graphic-editing
technology to be invented, greatly improving the computer-generated
graphics, which are more real than ever before. Starting
from the great armies of Anubis, down to the small creatures
protecting the grave of the Scorpion King, all of the
details have been taken a step up to a point never seen
before. These days the thin line between the real and
virtual world is drawing closer and closer.
This
film is a must see for a variety of the audience, starting
from action-hungry kids, down to historically stimulated
parents...if you miss this flick, the summer won't be
the same!
